September 1905, Engler 2961, 2965a (B+, syntypes) and from Tanzania and Natal.
Information
Small or medium-sized tree 4–15 m. tall. Young stems quadrangular and slightly winged. Leaf-lamina up to 15 x 6·5 cm., mostly lanceolate-elliptic to oblanceolate-elliptic, apex rounded to acute, very rarely very shortly subacuminate, base (at least of some leaves, subcordate or very broadly rounded; petiole 0·2–0·6 cm. long. Receptacle (including pseudopedicel) + calyx + upper receptacle 0·45–0·6 cm. long; calyx + upper receptacle 0·2–0·3 cm. long; filaments 0·8–1·2 cm. long. Fruit c. 1·8 x 0·9 cm., purple-black, urceolate, persistent calyx + upper receptacle 0·2 cm. long x 0·5 cm. wide.
Habitat
In fringing forest and swamp forest. Over most of its range it appears to be rare and sporadic. In the “rain forest” of the Victoria Falls, however, it seems to replace S. cordatum and S. guineense and is the commonest tree there forming the bulk of the canopy.

Notes
Most of the specimens cited appear to be hybrids between S. cordatum and S. guineense subsp. guineense. Tinley 1081 from the Okavango Delta, Botswana is intermediate between S. cordatum and S. guineense subsp. barotsense. Both taxa are at the southern limits of their range there and are the only Syzygiums known to occur. Possible hybrids between S. cordatum and S. guineense subsp. afromontanum are described under S. masukuense (see p. 197). Fries 727 from Bwana Mkubwa, Zambia, is cited (Fries loc. cit.) as S. intermedium. Although some leaves are slightly subacuminate it agrees with S. cordatum in all other respects, and, until field and experimental studies can be made, is in my opinion best regarded as belonging to that species. The following specimens from riverine habitats differ from S. guineense subsp. guineense in their shorter petioles and much less attenuate leaf-bases. They may represent backcrosses with S. guineense or segregates from the hybrid. Zambia. E: Chipata (Fort Jameson), fl. 2.x.1966, Mutimushi 1538 (FHO). S: Mapanza, fl. 11.x.1953, Robinson 349 (K).
