Information
Trees up to 30 m. high, fluted at base of trunk; young branches fluted; bark dark red to brown. Petiole 1–2 cm. long, canaliculate; leaf-blade coriaceous, dull green, elliptic, ovate-elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, 5–25 cm. long, 2.5–9 cm. wide, shortly acuminate, ± rounded at the base; midrib and secondary veins prominent beneath; tertiary veins typically parallel and prominent beneath. Inflorescence axillary, borne on a short shoot 5–10 mm. long; pedicels 2–3 mm. long in flower, elongating up to 1 cm. in fruit. Flowers white to cream, 4-merous. Calyx green with 4 ± deltoid lobes. Petals 4, oblong-lanceolate, 4–5 mm. long, 1–1.5 mm. wide. Stamens 4; filaments adnate to petals for most of their length. Ovary semi-inferior, embedded in receptacle, 3–4-locular; ovules elongate. Fruit ellipsoid, 2.5–3.5 cm. long, 2–3 cm. across, embedded in swollen receptacle so that a ridge, bearing the sepal scars, is created almost at apex of fruit. Fig. 5.

DISTR. U2 westwards through the Congo Republic to Nigeria and southwards into Angola

Notes
This single gathering from the Flora area comes from an area with many West African affinities and is probably the most easterly point of distribution. More material is badly needed !
