leaves numerous, arranged in a dense rosette, oblong or narrowly lanceolate-oblong, acute, slightly undulate at the margin, all spreading, slightly recurved at the apex, bright green, usually with few or numerous blackish or purple-black blotches, mostly arranged in transverse bars, 1 1/2–3 1/2 in. long, 1/3–1 1/4 in. broad; scapes erect, slender, 1/2–1 ft. high, with 2 or 3 lanceolate sheaths; racemes 1 1/2–6 in. long, usually lax, many-flowered; bracts lanceolate, acuminate, 1/6– 1/3 in. long; pedicels 1/4– 1/3 in. long; flowers light purple with a few elongated dark purple blotches on the lip; sepals broadly ovate, obtuse or subacute, 1/6 in. long, lateral somewhat falcate; petals ovate, subobtuse, obscurely erose at the margin, slightly shorter and broader than the sepals; lip linear-oblong, 1/4– 1/3 in. long, 3-fid or 3-partite, rarely with a pair of short additional lateral teeth; column short and broad; capsule narrowly oblong, 1/3– 1/2 in. long. null

Notes
A very variable species. Some of the Natal specimens have unspotted leaves, and at first sight look different from the form figured in the Botanical Magazine. Examination of plants in the field might throw some light on the cause of this variation.
