Information
Robust perennial tussock-grass with short rhizomes, sometimes forming looping stolons, 1.3–3 m high, the stems 3.5–8 mm in diam. at the base; leaves flat, harshly scabrid along the margins. Panicle linear-lanceolate, 25–35 cm long, the primary branches bearing spikelets or branchlets from the base. Spikelets 1.7–2.3 mm long; lower glume 1-nerved, lanceolate, 1.3–2.3 mm long, acute; upper glume narrowly ovate, almost as long as the spikelet; lemma similar to the upper glume, as long as the spikelet; anthers 3, 1–1.3 mm long. Grain narrowly oblong, 0.7–1 mm long, tetragonal in section.
Range
N1–3 tropical Africa southwards to South Africa and Namibia.
Altitude range
0–950 m.

Notes
Aus dur, bieyis, darif bal (Som.). Often confused with S. robustus Kunth, a species from western African seashores somewhat intermediate between S. consimilis and S. virginicus.
