Weak-stemmed shrub or tree up to 10 m. tall; branches dark grey to brownish, striate; bark of the bole flaking into thin pieces of 5 × 2·5 cm. Leaves imparipinnate, (1)3–7(9)-foliolate; petiole in the 1-foliolate leaves 1·5–2 cm. long, petiole and rhachis in the multifoliolate ones 2·5–20 cm. long, greyish-brown to yellowish, terete, striate, glabrous or ± pilose; leaflets light green, turning olive-green when dried, concolorous or nearly so, glabrous, except sometimes for the base of the midrib, ± rigidly coriaceous, the terminal 6·5–20 × 3–10 cm., obovate-elliptic to broadly elliptic, acute or ± cuneate at the base and petiolulate, the lateral ones 5·5–15 × 2·7–7·7 cm., oblong-elliptic or ovate, rounded or subacute at the base and petiolulate (petiolules 0·4–1 cm. long, canaliculate, somewhat swollen and wrinkled), ± rounded or usually shortly acuminate at the apex (acumen obtuse), and with very undulate pale-cartilaginous thickened margin; midrib prominent above and below; lateral nerves and reticulation whitish or lighter than the lamina, slightly prominent above, more so beneath, the tertiary nerves somewhat raised beneath as also the venation, collected into an oblique nerve directed towards the lateral-nerve-axils. Panicles up to 40 × 27 cm., axillary and terminal, pyramidal, lax, with ± pilose axis and branches, finally glabrescent; pedicels 1–3 mm. long, articulated near the middle. Flower-bud ovoid, not apiculate. Calyx 1·5–2 × c. 3 mm., cupuliform, lobulate, the lobules c. 0·5 mm. long, rounded, ciliolate. Petals cream-yellow, oblong-elliptic, acute, fleshy, with an inner apical cuneiform thickening and longitudinally cristate along the median line on the inner side, glabrous. Anthers c. 1 mm. long. Drupe blackish-violet at maturity, 15–20 × 12–15 × 8–10 mm., globose-ellipsoid, asymmetric.
