Information
Tufted perennial arising from a short rhizome; culms 90–200 cm. high. Leaf-blades often rolled, 15–50 cm. long, 3–7(–12) mm. wide. Panicle linear to narrowly lanceolate, 15–40 cm. long, with capillary peduncles; racemes composed of 1–4 sessile spikelets, each accompanied by a barren pedicel (rarely the lowest spikelet in a raceme accompanied by a fertile pedicelled spikelet). Spikelets lanceolate, 4–6(–6.5) mm. long; callus rounded, shortly bearded; lower glume coriaceous, shining, without visible nerves, glabrescent to loosely hairy with white or grey hairs; awn geniculate, (0–)4–13(–25) mm. long. Notes
A polymorphic species, indistinctly differentiated from S. nudipes Nash of southern Africa. The latter has spikelets (5–)6–7(–9) mm. long; the lower glume thinly coriaceous, copiously pilose, the nerves apparent in the upper half.
