Inflorescence-rhachis 1–6 cm. long. Calyx usually short, 1.3–1.5(–1.8) cm. long, covered with hairs.

Dewit & Duvigneaud sink Smithia bequaertii into K. africana completely, but I agree with the annotations of Gillett that there is undoubtedly a difference between the small-flowered and largest-flowered variants of K. africana, although there is no geographical correlation and the variation is continuous. Unfortunately the type of S. bequaertii is at the upper end of the range of size for the small-flowered variant (1.6–1.7 cm. long calyx). S. chamaecrista Benth. is very similar indeed to this variety and I doubt if it can be distinguished at any level; it was described from Madagascar.
