Names
SETARIA sagittifolia (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Walp. [family POACEAE], (1852).
Information
Weak-stemmed annual up to 80 cm high; leaves broadly linear to narrowly lanceolate, at least the lower falsely petiolate and sagittate, the lobes 2–30 cm long. Panicle narrowly oblong to ovate, 3–15 cm long, the spikelets secund along scaberulous raceme-like primary branches; bristles 2–15 mm long. Spikelets suborbicular, 1.8–2 mm long, laterally compressed; lower glume 1/3 the length of the spikelet; upper glume 1/2 the length of the spikelet; lower floret male or barren; upper lemma conspicuously gibbous, keeled, rugose.
Range
S3 Sudan and Arabia southwards to South Africa.
Distribution
SOMALIA Kazmi 5192.
Notes
The combination of gibbous spikelets and keeled upper lemma was, at one time, considered sufficient to warrant segregation of this and other species into the genus Cymbosetaria Schweick. However, they represent only the extreme condition of a continuum, and segregation cannot thus be justified.
