Tufted perennial arising from a short rhizome; stems up to 200 cm high, pubescent at the nodes; leaves flat or inrolled, attenuate to a filiform tip. Panicle contracted, spike-like, cylindrical or somewhat interrupted, 3–30 cm long, the bristles pallid, often with purple tips, sometimes wholly purple, the rhachis tomentellous to sparsely pilose; bristles 2–15 mm long. Spikelets broadly ovate to gibbously suborbicular, somewhat laterally compressed, 2–3(–4) mm long; lower glume 1/2–2/3 the length of the spikelet; upper glume 2/3 as long to as long as the spikelet, 7- to 9-nerved; lower floret male; upper lemma punctate to obscurely rugose.
