Information
Plant to 8 m tall, with trunk to 50 cm in diameter; pith 4–5 cm in diameter; dead lamina quickly shed, only leaf-bases retained until eventually shed by developing bark. Periodic reproduction yields densely branched, spreading plants that regularly attain five reproductive cycles. Leaf lamina cordate, to 51 cm long and 23 cm wide, lower portion of leaf constricted to form a pseudo-petiole to 32 cm long, lower leaf surface with a sparse to dense, felty indumentum. Capitula pendulous. Ray florets absent; disc florets 90–130.
Range
DISTR. U 3; K 3, 5 endemic to Mt Elgon
Altitude range
3750–4225 m
Distribution
KENYA Mt Elgon, Feb. 1930, Gardner 2269! & W slope of Koitobos, May 1948, Hedberg 872! & trail to Koitobos, no date, Ekkens 622UGANDA Mt Elgon, 1939, Dale A2/41 (U.73)! & Jackson’s Summit, Jan. 1948, Eggeling 5753!
Notes
USES. None recorded on specimens from our area CONSERVATION Protected in the National Park; least concern (LC) Var. ligulatus likely results from residual gene-flow along the zone of contact of subsp. barbatipes and subsp. elgonensis. However, such gene-flow must be uncommon because the two subspecies do not synchronize their mass flowering. Although Taylor 3719 has ray florets present, the preponderance of morphological attributes are those of subsp. barbatipes.
