woolly on the crown of root, otherwise glabrous; stem erect, flexuous, striate, sparsely leafy, nude above, and ending in a lax, branching corymbose panicle; cauline leaves varying from broadly ovato-lanceolate to elongato-lanceolate-acuminate, straight or falcate, rigid, quite entire or subdenticulate, midribbed and obliquely penni-nerved; pedicels long, sparingly scaly; inv. of about 8 broad, glabrous, striate scales, nearly nude at base; disc-fl. 20–30; rays about 5; achenes glabrous, striate. Very nearly related to S. latifolius, but with fewer leaves (usually 3–4), a flexuous stem, a laxer inflorescence, longer pedicels and more fl. in the heads. The leaves vary in shape quite as much as in S. latifolius : in α, 2–4 inches long, 1–1 1/2 broad; in β. 5–10 inches long, 3–5 lines wide.
