Information
Small tree or shrub up to 6 m tall; young branchlets softly pubescent, becoming glabrous. Leaves petiolate, oblong-ovate, oblong-elliptic to linear-lanceolate, (1–)2.5–5.5(–9)≈0.5–2(–2.5) cm, coriaceous, obtuse to rounded, base cuneate; upper surface glabrous or slightly pubescent below; petiole 2–10 mm, pubescent. Flowers pink or purple, sometimes variegated with white, sweet-scented, in axillary or terminal racemes 3–15 cm long, often borne on short shoots which become spiny, many-flowered; peduncle and rachis pubescent; bracts and bracteoles soon caducous; pedicels 10–18(–20) mm, pubescent. Posterior sepal ovate, 4–6≈3–5 mm, ciliate; wing-sepals suborbicular, (3–)5–9.5 mm in diameter; anterior sepals suborbicular to broadly ovate, 2.5–4.5 mm in diameter. Upper petals narrowly elliptic or oblong-obovate, 5–7.5≈2.5–4 mm, ciliate towards the base; carina 8–10≈5 mm, with a small lobed appendage, 1 mm long, near the apex. Staminal sheath 6–7 mm long, ciliate on the upper margin. Fruit 5–7≈1–2 cm, with an oblong-elliptic somewhat obliquely curved wing, with a second imperfect and rudimentary wing; nut subglobose, 8–10 mm in diameter, rugulose or smooth. Fig. 2, p. 5.

Notes
USES. In Tanzania the root is used against roundworm, to expel intestinal parasites in children and as cathartic against constipation. Sometimes grown as an ornamental.
