Information
hairy, sometimes only the inflorescence; rhizome 1/8– 1/5 in. in diam., horizontal, woody; stems 8–20 in. long, slender, very slender at the base, with distant nearly leafless sheaths; leaves 6–10 by 1/10 in., lower gradually shorter; spike 2–5 in. long; clusters of spikelets 1/4–1 in. apart, drooping, at least when ripening; spikelets 1/6– 1/5 in. long, many bisexual; nut 1/16– 1/12 in., ovoid, round-trigonous, white, smooth, shining (but see var. β); gynophore obpyramidal, margin obscurely 3-lobed, confluent with the nut, disc scarcely discernible. null

The typical form is also found in Tropical Africa and America.
