small, glabrous, tufted, annual; stems 2–4 in. long, each with 1 spikelet; leaves 0, i.e. uppermost sheath carrying sometimes a green point 1/6 in. long; spikelet 1/10– 1/5 in. long, ovoid, sometimes produced in fruit, many-flowered, pale; bract shorter than the spikelet; hypogynous bristles 0; style linear, nearly as long as the nut, branches 2 as long as the style; nut nearly 1/2 the length of the glume, obovoid flattened; outermost cells minute, quadrate, becoming white, searious and breaking up, thus appearing as numerous rows of points on the black nut. null

Notes
This plant is like the common S. cernuus, Vahl., but differs in having a 2-fid style and flattened nut. The “Sénegal” example was seen in Steudel's own herbarium.
