Information
glabrous; stolons and rhizome 0; stems 2–8 in. long, densely tufted, setaceous, with 4–5 elevated strong angles (between these apparently dotted), carrying 1 head of 1–3 (rarely more) sessile spikelets; leaf-sheaths scarious, white or discoloured, broad, rolling up and wearing away (not lacerate-fimbriate), uppermost leafless; leaves as though a prolongation of the midrib of the sheath, sometimes 2/3 the length of the stem, terete, very similar to the stem but slenderer; bracts not more than 2, lower as though a continuation of the stem 1/5–1 in. long; spikelets 1/8– 1/6 by 1/12– 1/8 in., 4–12 flowered, chestnut or brown; glumes boat-shaped, with no definite keel, ovate, obtuse or truncate, chestnut-red with 13 paler curved striations, central nerve not reaching the tip of the glume, margins and tip of glume scarious, not incurved; stamens 3; anthers linear-oblong, yellow, crested; style much shorter than the nut, linear, deciduous, branches 3 linear, longish; gynophore distinct, obpyramidal, margin 3-lobed; nut 2/5 the length of the glume, round-trigonous, obovoid-truncate, about as broad as long, smooth, finally a leaden-black green-tinged. null
