Information
glabrous, tufted, annual; stem 5–10 in. long in the type form of Linnæus (which is I. seslerioides, Kunth), more commonly 2–6 in. (S. cartilagineus, Poir., or S. bergianus, Spreng.), bearing a head of 1–13 (commonly 3–8) spikelets; leaves often 1/2 the length of the stem, narrowly linear; lowest bract 1/4–1 in. long, leaf-like, usually longer than the inflorescence; spikelets 1/4 by 1/8 in., angular, not terete; glumes often 3-ranked or the lower nearly 2-ranked, rigid, keeled, ovate, tip triangular or scarcely pointed, back curved, each side with 4–6 curved lines, yellow, with a larger or smaller chestnut-red patch near the top; hypogynous bristles 0; stamens 3, anthers linear-oblong, scarcely apiculate; nut 1/2 the length of the glume, ellipsoid, trigonous, pyramidal at the top, minutely tubercular, somewhat transversely undulate or smooth, golden or becoming black; outermost cells short, longitudinal-oblong, more or less inflated; style linear, nearly as long as the nut, branches 3 longer than the style. null
