Information
Tufted annual with few–many crowded stems; stems 1–30 cm long below the inflorescence, or total length 6–60 cm when including the bract, 0.3–1.6 mm thick, terete to somewhat angular, hollow with transverse septa. Leaf-sheaths pale to light reddish, without blades. Inflorescence of 1–25 sessile spikelets in an apparently lateral globose cluster; major inflorescence-bract stem-like or flattened, 5–30 cm long, with some transverse septa, much longer than the stem. Spikelets 3–9 x 2–4 mm, ovoid, obtuse, golden brown to bronze-coloured. Glumes 2.5–3.2 mm long, broadly ovate, very concave, pale golden below, darker above, often ending in a short indistinct mucro; midrib distinct only near apex. Perianth absent. Style with 3 branches. Nutlet 1.2–1.5 mm long, obovate, triangular with concave sides, strongly transversely wrinkled on the 3 sides, dark brown when mature. Basal flowers sometimes present and producing 2–2.5 mm long nutlets.
