Notes
I have very little doubt that these varieties are (with perhaps the exception of the last) entirely dependent on the conditions of the habitat, and also that S. ovalis (Nees, Fl. Afr. Austr. 421) and S. scaberrimus (Nees, l.c. 423), so far as the latter does not come under var. tenuis, represent only states of S. fasciculatus in a broad sense. The localities given by Nees for them are:— S. ovalis —COASTREGION: Robertson Div.; between Kochmans Kloof and Gauritz River, along with the type, Ecklon. S. scaberrimus —CENTRALREGION: Beaufort West Div.; between Ganze Fontein and Bok Poort, 3500 ft., Drège. WESTERNREGION: Little Namaqualand; Kamies Bergen, 3500 ft., Drège. S. scaberrimus, var. nanus —CENTRALREGION: Richmond Div; near the Zeekoe River, 5000 ft., Drège. WESTERNREGION: Little Namaqualand; near Kuigunjels on the Orange River, Drège.
