Notes
A wide survey of tropical African species has allowed the union of S. urostachya and S. stuhlmannii with the well-known West African species S. barteri. Distinction at varietal level based upon umbellule peduncle-length is still feasible, however, in the case of the two East African taxa. This character is absolute in many instances, only rarely with slight overlap between the varieties. The size of bracts subtending the peduncles is apparently of no taxonomic significance. Distribution of both varieties in the present Flora is distinct as far as records indicate, except for U2 where both have been collected.
