plant 1 1/2–2 3/4 ft. high, very stout; leaves 2, radical, sessile, spreading, ovate-orbicular or cordate-orbicular, subobtuse, 4–8 1/2 in. long, 3–7 in. broad, fleshy; scapes 1 1/2–2 3/4 ft. high, with several broad spathaceous imbricate sheaths; spikes oblong, 4–10 in. long, dense, many-flowered; bracts ovate or ovate-oblong, subobtuse, 3/4–1 1/4 in. long, reflexed after flowering; pedicels 6–8 lin. long; flowers large, bright carmine or rose with carmine tips to the segments; sepals and petals united at the base; odd sepal oblong, obtuse, about 1/2 in. long; lateral sepals spreading, elliptic-oblong, longer than the odd sepal; petals oblong, subacute, nearly as long as the odd sepal; lip cucullate, broadly orbicular-ovate, 6–7 lin. long, with apiculate reflexed apex; spurs elongate, curved, slender, 8–10 lin. long; column curved, 5–6 lin. long; stigma subquadrate, emarginately 2-lobed, 2 lin. long; rostellum triangular, subacute, nearly as long as the stigma. null

Notes
A very robust species, bearing some resemblance to S. carneum, R. Br., but markedly different in the shape of the stigma. I have not seen the Knysna specimen.
