plant 3/4–1 1/2 ft. high; stems stout; leaves 2–3, suberect, ovate-oblong to broadly elliptic, subacute, 3–6 in. long, somewhat fleshy; scapes 3/4–1 1/2 ft. high, with several somewhat imbricate spathaceous sheaths; spikes 2–6 in. long, dense, many-flowered; bracts ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acute or acuminate, 1/2– 3/4 in. long, reflexed after flowering; pedicels 1/3– 1/2 in. long; flowers medium-sized, white, streaked with red (Allison, Wood); odd sepal oblong or elliptic-oblong, obtuse, 2 1/2–3 1/2 lin. long; lateral sepals rather broader and spreading; petals oblong or elliptic-oblong, obtuse, 2 1/2–3 1/2 lin. long; lip cucullate, broadly elliptic-oblong, 3–5 lin. long, with a broadly oblong obtuse crenulate reflexed apex; spurs rather stout below, more or less acuminate above, 3 1/2–5 lin. long, somewhat curved; column curved, 2 1/2–4 lin. long; stigma subquadrate, 1 1/2 lin. long, broader than long; rostellum shortly tridentate, rather shorter than the stigma. null

Notes
A very variable species, if all the above are really identical. I have not seen the type of S. pentadactylum, Kränzl., but the Angolan S. Ivantalæ, Reichb. f., which is referred here by Schlechter, is clearly different.
