Notes
Addenda : The synonym Orchis bicornis, Linn. Sp. Pl. ed. ii. 1330, should be excluded. It was based on Linn. Amœn. Acad. vi. 109, and Orchis lutea, caule geniculato, Buxb. Pl. Min. Cogn. Cent. iii. 6, t. 8 (misquoted by Linneus as t. 6), which is Satyrium bicorne, Thunb., as correctly cited at p. 170 of this volume. The mistake apparently began with Loddiges, who in 1818 (Bot. Cab. t. 104) wrongly figured S. coriifolium under the name of S. cucullatum, remarking that it was “Orchis bicornis of the older authors.” S. cucullatum, Thunb., however, is a synonym of S. bicorne, Thunb. Bolus (Orch. Cap. Penins. 124) cited O. bicorne, Linn., as a synonym of S. coriifolium, and the error seems to have been copied into all subsequent works. Bolus also cites as S. erectum, Lindl., the figures Lodd. Bot. Cab. t. 104; Bot. Mag. t. 2172; and Bot. Reg. t. 703, whereas the first was called S. cucullatum and the two others S. coriifolium. There is the further complication that S. erectum, Lindl., is not the original S. erectum, Sw. Bolus cited Orchis bicornis, Linn. Sp. Pl. ed. ii. 1330, under S. coriifolium, and O. bicornis, Linn. Amœn. Acad. vi. 109, under S. bicorne, but the former includes the latter, and both were based on Orchis lutea, caule geniculato, Buxb. Pl. Min. Cogn. Cent. iii. t. 8, which is a quite characteristic figure of S. bicorne.
