Names
LEBECKIA Candolleana Walp. [family LEGUMINOSAE-PAPILIONOIDEAE], Repert. 1, p. 607
LEBECKIA contaminata Benth. [family LEGUMINOSAE-PAPILIONOIDEAE], ! non Thunb. E. & Z. 1335, ex parte.
Sarcophyllum carnosum E. Mey. [family ], ! Comm. p. 32.
LEBECKIA pauciflora Benth.? [family LEGUMINOSAE-PAPILIONOIDEAE], non E. & Z.
Information
glabrous, ascending, suffruticose; leaves filiform, secund, sub-erect, acute, distinctly jointed; racemes pedunculate, laxly several-flowered; calyx-teeth triangular, shorter than the tube; legumes on long stipites, linear, straight or subfalcate, flat, the ventral suture with a narrow margin, valves membranous. A more slender and less densely leafy plant than L. Plukenetiana, with smaller flowers, and readily known when in fruit, by the long stalk to the slender legume. Racemes few or several flowered, lengthening. Flowers 2–2 1/2 lines long, pale yellow. Pods 1–1 1/4 inch long, 1 line wide; the stipes 1/2 inch long or more.
Distribution
SOUTH AFRICA Cape flats and neighbouring districts, common. (Herb. Bth., Hk., D., Sd.)
Notes
This appears to be L. contaminata, DC. Prod. 2. p. 136, and is certainly the plant of Bentham and partly of E. & Z.! and others; but it is not Thunberg's plant, which, according to his Herbarium, is Aspalathus corymbosa, E. Mey.! and A. tenuifolia, DC! The name therefore had better be suppressed altogether. It is impossible to say whether Bentham's “ L. pauciflora ” be a good species or not until the fruit be known.
