The flowers in threes with the perianth of each provided with a lateral truncate shield, distinguish S. mossambicensis from all the species in the Flora Zambesiaca area except S. perennis from which it differs in having the testa minutely papillose, not hairy, and in having cylindrical not tapering flowering spikes. S. mossambicensis is so far restricted to Mozambique (GI). Mogg 29305 (K; SRGH), from the same locality as the type, is conspecific. See note also under S. perennis.A S. perenni seminis testa minute papillosa non pilosa, spicis floriferis cylindricis differt.
