Information
Prostrate or decumbent herb, with numerous lateral erect or ascending lateral branches 10–40 cm. high. Sterile segments c. 3–4 mm. in diam., green. Spikes 1.3–4.5 cm. long, 2–3.5 mm. in diam., cylindrical. Flowers 3 in a cluster. Perianth truncate with a lateral shield in whose centre the perianth opens. Seeds pale brown; testa minutely papillose.

Mozambique GI Rio Pomene Manth, Ponta Barra Falsa, fl. & fr. 21.xi.1958, Mogg 28914 (LISC).
Notes
The flowers in threes with the perianth of each provided with a lateral truncate shield, distinguish S. mossambicensis from all the species in the Flora Zambesiaca area except S. perennis from which it differs in having the testa minutely papillose, not hairy, and in having cylindrical not tapering flowering spikes. S. mossambicensis is so far restricted to Mozambique (GI). Mogg 29305 (K; SRGH), from the same locality as the type, is conspecific.
