Notes
Calvino s.n. was identified as S. stuckyi Godefr.-Leb. (1903) by N.E. Brown according to Chiovenda, Fl. Somala 2: 422 (1932), a species otherwise only known from Mozambique. However, the leaves of the sterile Somali material shows well-marked furrows along the sides and back and therefore agree better with S. fischeri in Kenya and Tanzania, and I provisionally refer it to this species. Flowering material from Somalia is needed for conclusiveness. The description of the flowers above is based on East African material, and is taken from Rauh in Sukkulentenkunde 7–8: 108–127 (1963) and Pfennig in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 102: 175 (1981). According to Pfennig (op. cit.: 176, 1981) S. stuckyi has a large head-like inflorescence with free parts of tepals c. 40 mm long and tube 90–100 mm long. The record of S. robusta N.E. Br. in Cuf. Enum.: 1571 (1971) is based on Guidotti s.n. (FT). This consists of sterile material from southern Somalia that belongs here.
