Sansevieria pfennigii Mbugua [family DRACAENACEAE], sp. nov. S. fischeri arcte affinis sed foliis 2 plerumque minoribus 0.4–0.5(–0.6) cm crassis (39–)44–64(–76) cm longis angustissimis sulcis numerosis obsitis sed carina carentibus, rhizomate parvo plusminus 1.5 cm crasso, foliis squamosis basalibus 2–3 acutis membranaceis 2.5–4 cm longis, inflorescentia corymboso-capitata pedunculo vaginis obsito, bracteis longissimis 1.3–1.7 cm longis flores amplectantibus, floribus in axillis bractearum et in internodiis inter bracteas exorientibus distincta. Typus: Tanzania, Lindi District: Lake Lutamba, Schlieben 5917 (MO!, holo., K!, iso.)
Information
Herb with subterranean rhizome 1.5–1.8 cm in diameter. Leaves erect, 1–2 per plant, cylindrical from base to apex, 44–64(–76)≈0.4–0.6 cm, slightly recurved at base then straight and inward recurved just before apex, smooth to slightly rough towards apex, spine 0.3–0.4 cm long, brownish red at base, grey-greenish towards the tip, sharp but hardly piercing, horny; no channel, grooves numerous formed on drying; basal scaly leaves 2–3, 2.4–4.3≈1.2–1.4 cm, acute, membranous. Inflorescence terminal, corymbose-capitate, 11–13.5 cm long; axis 0.4–0.6 cm in diameter; one flower per bract, ensheathed in the bracts, no evident clusters, lower flowers seem to be sterile; lower inflorescence bracts 5–7, 0.6–2.5 cm apart, 0.9–1.3 cm long, membranous, acute; bracteoles densely together, 1.2–1.6≈0.4–0.6 cm, acute, membranous. Flower perianth white-pink or greyish green, 3.5–4.2 cm long, 0.2 cm wide; stamens at level of lobes, anthers 0.4 cm long; style exserted beyond the lobes. Fruit a globose berry, blackish when dry.

Notes
USES. No data. CONSERVATION Data deficient. Named after Dr. H. Pfennig who devoted a great part of his life to the study and collection of sansevierias. Seen as part of S. sulcata Baker by Newton in Ill. Handbook Succ. Plants 1: 271 (2001) but that has a channel running from top to bottom i.e. slightly crescentic and also has a longer peduncle with flowers further apart from each other.
