Notes
This is an unsatisfactory taxon, requiring further careful study in the field. I have little doubt that it corresponds with form 2 of S. pachystachya as defined by Tölken in Bothalia 9: 298 (1967) and would have been disposed to follow his view except that the fruiting spikes are (in the herbarium) clearly narrower than in S. pachystachya, not regularly cylindrical, and with a strong terndency to taper towards the apex. The record of “S. herbacea L.” from Mozambique, in P.O.A.C.: 171 (1895) on the authority of Engler, by Baker & Wright in Dyer, Fl. Trop. Afr. 6, 1: 86 (1909) may be referable here. It almost certainly does not relate to the true S. herbacea, a European species.
