Information
Much branched shrub, 0.3–1 m high; stems erect to ascending, sometimes rooting at base. Internodes cylindrical or club-shaped, up to 7 mm long, glaucous, free leaf-tips forming short wide 2-lobed cupule. Flowering branches erect with terminal, cylindrical, obtuse spikes 30–60 x 3–4 mm. Flowers in 3’s, protruding by up to 1/3rd the length of the internode; perianth 3-dentate, conical. Pericarp membranous. Seed c. 1 mm long, black, shining, densely papillate, verrucose on back.
Range
N1–3; S1 Mediterranean coasts, Red Sea coasts, extending north to Jordan Valley.
Altitude range
near sea level–400 m.

Notes
Horun (Som.). This species has a confused nomenclatural history which is set out more fully than usual.
