Information
Loosely tufted perennial with short rhizomes; culms 60–200 cm. high. Leaf-blades linear, 10–40 cm. long, 2–6 mm. wide, the shoulders of the sheath prolonged into auricles 1–4 mm. long. Panicle cylindrical, 6–20 cm. long. Spikelets narrowly ovate, laterally compressed, 3–4.5 mm. long, glabrous or sometimes pubescent, purplish brown; lower glume ovate, ± 1/2 as long as the spikelet; upper glume membranous to subcoriaceous; lower floret ♂, its palea almost as long as the lemma.

DISTR. U1–4; T4 widely, though unevenly, throughout tropical Africa

Notes
Distinguished by the auriculate leaf-sheaths, but difficult to separate from S. indica unless the basal parts are well collected.
