Notes
H. altissima merges with H. compressa (L. f.) R. Br., a species from India and SE. Asia with a more slender habit and shorter sessile spikelets (lower glume 3–4 mm. long). The bulk of the plants fall readily enough into one or the other of the species, but there is sufficient intergradation to make the determination of marginal specimens uncertain. There is also a resemblance to H. sibirica (Gand.) Ohwi from China and Japan. This species has a similarly shaped sessile spikelet (lower glume 5–7 mm. long), but the articulation is transverse with the callus short and truncate.
