Information
Small sparingly branched tree or a shrub, rarely a scrambler, to 10 m. tall. Leaves petiolate, 3-foliolate; leaflets shortly petiolulate, 4–11.5 cm. long, 2–4.5 cm. wide, acuminate, rounded or acute at the apex, cuneate or slightly decurrent on the petiolule; petiole 3–14 cm. long. Inflorescence pseudo-terminal or terminal, the axis sometimes apparently growing forward into a leafy shoot, which may again produce an inflorescence; pedicels 2.5–6.5 cm. long. Sepals lanceolate, 16–20 mm. long. Adaxial petals ovate, strongly clawed, up to 7 cm. long, 3 cm. wide; abaxial petals linear-oblong or linear-lanceolate, up to 5 mm. long, chartaceous or fleshy, green turning reddish. Androphore 4–10 cm. long, longer or shorter than the gynophore; fertile stamens 6–8; staminode arises adaxially at the base of the androphore, short, cylindrical, surmounted by a number of usually well-developed stamens, the whole 0.5–3 cm. or more long. Cladostemon seems to be very close to Euadenia. These two genera would repay cytotaxonomic investigation. A knowledge of the ecology of Cladostemon in the area around Lake Mweru, Northern Rhodesia, would also be valuable.
