Information
Perennial trailing or rarely suberect herb 30–50 cm tall or 0.3–2.4 m long. Stems covered with whitish deflexed bristly hairs or with dense rather spreading ferruginous indumentum. Lowest leaves rarely 1-foliolate but majority 3-foliolate; leaflets 2.5–10 × 0.6–2.5 cm, the lateral leaflets shorter, oblong-elliptic to linear-oblong, rounded or slightly emarginate and mucronulate at the apex, cuneate at the base, sparsely bristly pubescent on both surfaces or glabrescent above and hairy beneath; venation raised beneath; petiole 0.8–4 cm long; rhachis 0.5–1 cm long; petiolules 1.5 mm long; stipules 3–6 mm long, filiform. Inflorescences axillary, subglobose to cylindrical, 6–20-flowered, sometimes with a subsessile few-flowered raceme from the same axil as the pedunculate one; rhachis 0.7–3 cm long; peduncles 0.2–5 cm long; flowers paired but primary pedicel suppressed; secondary pedicels 1–3 mm long; bracts and bracteoles small, 1.5–5 mm long, linear. Calyx covered with appressed bristly hairs; tube 2–3 mm long; lobes 1.5–2 mm long, narrowly triangular, the upper pair joined for one-third to half their length. Standard pink, red or purplish (yellow fide van Rensburg), 5–7.5 × 2.5–4.5 mm, violin-shaped or spathulate, covered with appressed silky hairs outside. Pod 1.4–2 cm × 6.5–7 mm, oblong, compressed, covered with long bristly sometimes ferruginous tubercular based hairs,1–2-seeded. Seeds very dark red-brown, 4–5 × 2.5–3 × 1–1.5 mm, oblong-ovoid; aril usually soon breaking off.
