Information
High-climbing liane; young branchlets ferruginous-tomentose, later glabrescent and with large pale lenticels. Tendrils tomentose. Leaf-lamina up to 20 × 16 cm., broadly transversely elliptic to reniform, apex obtuse, margin repand-dentate or in some older leaves repand, base cordate with a wide sinus up to 6 cm. across, very shallowly 3–5-lobed or entire (in the Cape Province, but not in our area, sometimes more deeply lobed or occasionally 3-partite), 3-nerved at the base, glabrescent above, ± ferruginous-tomentose below; petiole up to c. 6 cm. long, ferruginous-tomentose; stipules up to c. 8 × 8 mm., very broadly ovate, entire, ferruginous-tomentose. Inflorescences of subumbellate or subcapitate densely ferruginous-tomentose cymes; peduncle up to c. 2 cm. long; pedicels up to c. 2 mm. long; bracts similar to the stipules but smaller. Flowers densely ferruginous-tomentose. Fruit red, up to 2 cm. in diam., globose, glabrous. Seeds c. 1–3, brown, 8 × 6 mm., ellipsoid, ± flattened on one side; testa smooth.
Habitat
Also in Mauritius but probably cultivated. A liane of closed forest or fringing forest.
