stem 2–3 ft. high, erect, terete, dull olive, striate, purple-mottled, branching in the middle; branches virgate, ascending, compressed; leaf-sheaths 1 in. long, closely convolute, coriaceous, thinner at the margins, nervosostriate; apex subulato-mucronate; male spikelets 1–4 in erect terminal spicate cymes, each about 1/4 in. long, oblong, ultimately cuneate, compressed; spathe as long as the spikelet, ultimately deciduous; bracts loosely imbricate, ovate, oblong, coriaceous, mucronate; perianth-segments oblong, obtuse; lateral conduplicate, villous-carinate; intermediate flattish, with a prominent mid-nerve; anthers ovate; pistillode minute. null
