stems tufted, erect, cylindric, olive-coloured, white-spotted, sparingly branched or quite simple; leaf-sheaths 1 1/4 in. long, tightly convolute, except at the apex, subulato-mucronate; male spikelets subglobose or oblong, solitary or more commonly clustered at the end of the branches; bracts with long spreading awns; flowers compressed, arcuate; outer perianth-segments oblong or obovate-lanceolate; lateral conduplicate, villous; anthers apiculate; female spikes solitary or few, approximate at the ends of the branches, ovate-oblong, about 1 in. long, subtended by a sheath-like spathe; bracts ovate-anceolate, yellow-margined, with long terminal awns; flower solitary, terminal; perianth on a fleshy stalk; segments subequal, membranous, oblong-lanceolate or obovate, pointed; style short; stigmas 2, linear; fruit oblong, obtuse, smooth, bony, purplish, surrounded at the base by the persistent perianth; seed solitary, pendulous. null
