Information
Plant very variable in leaf shape and indumentum, from thinly pilose to densely villous or tomentose, but rarely silvery- sericeous. Inflorescence axis thinly hairy to densely furnished with patent or deflexed hairs. Outer tepals (3.5)4–5(6) mm. long, oblong-ovate, rather quickly narrowed to the mucronate apex, more or less densely pilose to lanate even in forms with thinly pilose foliage, 3-nerved. Branches of the sterile flowers terminated by (4)5–8 (13) usually stramineous uncinate setae up to 7 mm. long.
Habitat
In a great variety of habitats, commonly in various types of woodland (light to very dense shade), grassland, thickets, roadsides, as weed of cultivation, on rock, hillsides, on sandy or pebbly lake margins etc., usually on light sandy or alluvial soils

The commonest variety, found practically throughout the range of the species
