plant 1/3–1 ft. high; stem stout, often very stout; leaves radical and cauline, the lower 3 or 4 ovate or ovate-oblong, subobtuse, more or less spreading, 1–3 in. long, the upper much smaller, suberect, often sheath-like and reduced upwards into the bracts; scapes 1/3–1 ft. high; spikes 1 1/2–4 in. long, often dense and many-flowered; bracts ovate or ovate-lanceolate, subacute, 1/2–1 in. long; pedicels 5–6 lin. long; flowers large, bright yellow; dorsal sepal oblong-lanceolate, subobtuse, 4 lin. long; lateral sepals widely spreading or ascending, obliquely ovate, shortly acuminate, deeply concave or subsaccate, 4 lin. long; petals cohering with the dorsal sepal into an expanded limb, obliquely obovate, subobtuse at the inner angle, with a rounded minutely crenulate margin, somewhat concave, 4 lin. long; lip reniformly obovate, cuneate at the base, bilobed above, 4 lin. long, 6–9 lin. broad, with a crenulate margin; appendage ovate-oblong, obtuse, arched at the apex, with two diverging keels beneath, 3 1/2 lin. long; column short; arms of the rostellum oblong, obtuse, concave, about 1 lin. long; capsule fusiform-oblong, about 5 lin. long. null
