Notes
Despite the markedly disjunct distribution of this essentially West African species, fruiting material of the E. Usambara plant agrees very well indeed. Only two sheets of flowering material have been seen from East Africa, Greenway 4692 cited above and in flower-bud Peter 48173 (B !) from Kwamtili; these show a smaller size in bracts and flowers. The West African specimens of subsp. mildbraedii have oblong-lanceolate bracts 8–12 mm. long, and the standard 15–17 mm. long. The record (Thollon 4134) from the somewhat intermediate station of Congo Brazzaville given in K.B. 23: 487 (1969) was based on a misidentification. Further material may well show, however, a continuity of variation not apparent at present. Rojo (l.c.) does not uphold the subspecies.
