Information
Rhizome shortly creeping, erect or ascending, woody, occasionally branched, covered with dark brown long linear scales. Fronds 4–6-tufted, 0.9–1.5 m tall. Stipe yellow-brown to dark brown or ± black, 45–70 cm long, sometimes shiny, curved near to base. Lamina dark green, triangular in outline, up to ± 35–58 cm long and wide, imparipinnate near apex, bipinnate near base; pinnules oblong-lanceolate, 5–27 cm long, 1.5–5 cm wide, with a long terminal lobe 5.5–15 cm long, 5–10 mm wide, narrowly lanceolate, often bilobed at base and 3–16-jugate; oblong lateral ultimate lobes 1–4 cm long, 4–8 mm wide; sterile margins all serrate; lower pinnae with distinct stalks 1–6 cm long giving an open look to the frond; pinnule costae with spinules at junction of costules on upper surface; veins free. Sori extending from well above the sinus for about 3/4 length of the lobe.

Schelpe in Contr. Bolus Herb. 1: 64 (1969) states Pteris kivuensis C.Chr. (in Dansk. Bot. Arkiv 9: 71 (1937); type: Congo (Kinshasa), W. of Lake Kivu, Humbert 7826 (BM!, holo.) may be a variety of P. usambarensis differing in having a greyish green stipe, a lighter green lamina and less caudate pinna apices but Pichi Sermolli (in Webbia 32: 72 (1977) & in B.J.B.B. 53: 227 (1983)) states ‘ P. kivuensis can be confidently treated as a species on its own, sharply distinct amongst the free vein species’ and also records it from Rwanda and Burundi.Schippers in Fern Gaz. 14: 186 (1993) records it from the Nguru Mts citing Pócs et al. 88182/M.
