Information
Rhizome short, suberect or creeping, with scales dark brown, subulate, ± 3 mm long. Fronds tufted, erect, (10–)30–45 cm long, simply pinnate, often budding at the tips; stipe and rhachis dark brown or black-purple, shiny, glabrous; pinnae alternate, rectangular to fan-shaped, 2–5 cm long, 1–2 cm wide, the upper and outer margins lobulate, the lower entire, often breaking off at maturity, glabrous; pinna-stalklets 0.2–2.5(–4) cm long, delicate, those of lower pinnae longer. Sori narrowly oblong, 0.4–2.5 cm wide. Fig. 13/3 (p. 51).

Despite the arguments of Pichi Sermolli there seems to be no doubt that the drawing (Petiver, Gazophylacium Naturae 1, t. 4, fig. 4c (1702) on which Linnaeus based Adiantum philippense really cannot represent the fern described above and may not even be a fern. I am grateful to Dr B. Zimmer (pers. comm.) for convincing me of this.
