Notes
Milne-Redhead & Taylor 9682 (Tanzania, Songea District, Litenga Hill, 19 Apr. 1956) and B.D. Burtt 1294 (Tanzania, Kondoa District, Irangi Hills, Kolo, 1 Feb. 1928) had been named Pellaea swynnertoniana Sim (Ferns S. Afr. ed. 2: 213, t. 101 (1915). Type: Zimbabwe, Chirinda Forest, Swynnerton 850 (PRE, holo., K!, SRGH iso.)). In this the pinnules are much larger, up to 5.4 long cm, 5.2 cm wide, but there are many intermediates and Schelpe (J. S. Afr. Bot. 30: 187 (1964); F.Z., Pterid.: 133 (1970)) has reduced it to a variety. Typical specimens are striking but the two E African sheets cited above are intermediate with var. calamelanos as are many other specimens from Tanzania. Mixed gatherings with other species of Pellaea are not infrequent e.g. Burtt 908, Richards 19151, etc.
