Information
A much-branched small tree up to 9 m tall, mostly glabrous; stem c. 20 cm d.b.h.Petioles 1–3 cm long, with a pair of small subulate semipersistent stipels and/or a pair of sessile discoid glands at their apices.Leaf blades 15–30 × 6–11 cm, elliptic-oblong, very shortly obtusely acuminate at the apex, rounded or sometimes very shortly decurrent at the base, shallowly spinulose-denticulate on the margin, firmly chartaceous to thinly coriaceous, with a pair of sessile discoid glands on the upper surface at the base, drying reddish-brown beneath; lateral nerves in 16–25 pairs, the lower open, the upper looped, slightly prominent on leaf upper surface, prominent on leaf lower surface, tertiary nerves numerous and closely parallel, ± perpendicular to the lateral nerves, quaternary nerves reticulate.Stipular sheath terminal, 2–3 cm long, subulate, sharply acute, readily caducous.Inflorescences 1–3(7) cm long, axillary or sometimes borne on old wood, 2–3 or more per fascicle, not pedunculate; axis densely pubescent; bracts 2–3 mm long, broadly ovate, rounded, pubescent at the base, otherwise glabrous, chestnut-brown; bracteoles similar, but smaller and dorsally keeled.Male flowers fragrant; pedicels 0.5–1 cm long, partly or entirely pubescent, reddish; calyx lobes 3–5 × 1 mm, lanceolate, acute, pubescent outside at the apex, otherwise glabrous, becoming reflexed; petals 4–5 × 3–4 mm, elliptic-oblong to elliptic-obovate, ± rounded, glabrous, creamy-white; disk gland-mass glabrous or sparingly pubescent; stamens 42–55, filaments 3.5–5 mm long, anthers 0.5 mm long, white; pistillode (when present) 2 mm long, tripartite, pubescent.Female flowers: pedicels 0.8–1.2 cm long, evenly to densely pubescent; calyx ± as in the male; petals 4–5 × 4–5 mm, broadly ovate-suborbicular, somewhat erose; disk evenly pubescent; staminodes ± 20, 1.5 mm long; ovary 2 ×3 mm, depressed-globose, densely tomentose; styles 2 mm long.Fruit 1.5–1.8 × 2–2.3 cm, depressed 3-lobed to subglobose, densely tomentose and intermixed with longer hairs, dull reddish-brown; columella 7–9 mm long.Seeds 8–10 × 7–8 × 7–8 mm, transversely ovoid-subglobose, smooth, slightly shiny, brownish, streaked with darker brown.
