stem cylindrical, or subcompressed, repeatedly branched; leaves all similar, the upper sometimes setaceous, 1-nerved, lower long linear with 3–5 nerves; stipules long, united to the sheathing petiole of the leaf, free at the apex; peduncles variable, short or long, equal; spike often interrupted; upper flowers generally approximate; fruit large, olive or green, obliquely obovate, slightly compressed, 3-keeled on the dorsal margin, central one generally prominent (but variable), slightly convex, or nearly straight on the ventral margin. null
