annual; stem slender, glabrous, 2–3 ft. long, erect or decumbent at the base; leaves lanceolate, acuminate, rounded at the base, subsessile, glabrous or slightly hairy, the lower 3–4 in. long; ochreæ ciliate with long bristles; spikes slender, cylindrical, often several to a stem, 1 1/2–2 in. long; peduncle very slender, glabrous; bracts rigidly ciliate; perianth pink, eglandular, 1 lin. long; stamens 6–8; styles usually 3; nut usually trigonous, polished, shorter than the perianth. null
