Leaveslanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 5–30≈2–7 mm; wing sepals blue to greenish-blue, 5–8≈4–5.5 mm; upper petals 3–3.5≈2.5 mm; carina 6.5–7≈3.5–4 mm; crest 2–2.5 mm long; capsules 5–6.5≈3.5–4.5 mm; seeds 3–4≈1.5 mm, with rather short hairs. Fig. 8: 1, p. 15.

The Angolan endemic subsp. casuarina (Chodat) Paiva in Fontqueria 50: 219, t. 12/f, tab. 41/d (1998) [ P. viminalis Gürke var. casuarina Chodat in E.J. 48(1–2): 322 (1912)] has the leaves linear, 35–45≈1 mm; wing sepals often yellow, 7.5–8.5≈5–6 mm; upper petals 5–6≈2–2.5 mm; carina 8.5–10≈4.5 mm; crest 3–4 mm long; capsules 6.5–7.5≈3.5–4.5 mm; seeds 4.5–5≈2–2.5 mm, with rather long hairs.
