Notes
P. leptoclada is a variable species with little but its linear panicle to distinguish it from P. schimperana, so that its status is open to question. Two forms may be recognized: straggling plants with long nodding panicles and small green spikelets from the lowlands (P. leptoclada) and dwarf tufted plants with short erect panicles and larger purple spikelets from high altitudes (P. friesiorum). However, the distinction between the forms is very imprecise and shows no correlation with many other characters, so that they can scarcely be maintained as distinct species.
