Notes
E. macilenta may usually be recognized by its dark coloured spikelets and narrow acuminate glumes. It approaches E. minor, which has a rather stiff panicle with shorter pedicels and obtuse lemmas. It may also be mistaken for 30, E. gangetica, which has a globose grain and only 2 stamens, and E. homblei, a perennial species.  It is very closely allied to E. mexicana (Hornem.) Link, an American species with longer lemmas (2–2.3 mm.), and to E. nigra Steud., an Indian perennial.
