Coarse tufted perennial with hard rigid culms, 90–120 cm. high; leaves mostly cauline, somewhat glaucous; roots clothed in a dense sheath of hairs; coastal and inland sands.

[E. domingensis is closely allied to E. prolifera (Sw.) Steud. (= E. fascicularis Trin.), a species from the Congo Republic, Angola and tropical America with obtuse lemmas, fascicled leaves and a narrowly oblong panicle with short divergent branches. in America, however, the two species are not so clearly separated and tend to intergrade.]
