Information
Leaves not markedly dissimilar where clustered on short shoots; petiole 1–3 mm long; blade usually linear, oblong-lanceolate or -oblanceolate, atypically obovate, cuneate, 2–7.5 × 0.2–1.5(–2) cm, 3–5-nerved but venation often obscure. Umbels 1–3, axillary, at nodes below or on short shoots, 3–7-flowered; peduncle (1–)3–9 mm; pedicels 4–11 mm. Petals separate, 2.5–3.5 cm; basal part below filament-insertion red, yellow or less often white or orange, S-shaped, 5–8 mm long, with 4–5 paired folds inside; distal part normally red, atypically yellow, recurving, ± twisted, linear-spathulate above. Stamens red; anthers 7–12 mm. Berry red, ellipsoid or urceolate, 9–12 × 7 mm, smooth.
Range
N1–3; C1, 2; S1–3 north along the Red Sea coast to southernmost Egypt, through Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti to Kenya, Uganda, eastern Zaire and Tanzania, also in the Middle East and the Arabian peninsula.
Altitude range
30–1250 m.
Distribution
SOMALIA Bally 11776; Thulin & Warfa 4578; Warfa 1034.
Notes
A common species providing useful forage for livestock.
