Information
Tree or shrub up to 15 m. high; stems pale grey-green and 4-lined when young, becoming whitish, eventually terete. Leaf with lamina grey-green, ± glaucous, 3–8 × 1·5–5·5 cm., ovate to elliptic-oblong or obovate, obtuse or obtusely acuminate to rounded at the apex, with margin entire, cuneate to angustate at the base, chartaceous, with reticulate venation equally prominent on both sides; petiole 2–5 mm. long; stipules very small, acicular-triangular. Flowers 1–7(20) in condensed rounded clusters; peduncle 1–3 mm. long. Sepals 0·3–0·5 mm., semicircular, rounded, with margin entire. Petals 1–1·5 mm. long, elliptic or broadly ovate, with entire margin. Disk with lobes rounded or shallowly emarginate. Ovary ovoid, slightly asymmetric; ovules 2. Fruit white, 5–7 mm. long, ellipsoid to obovoid-ellipsoid. Seeds 1(2).
Habitat
In dune scrub in our area.

Notes
The above specimen is the only one recorded for the African mainland; but it agrees very well with material from Ceylon and S. India apart from having more flowers on an average in each cyme. P. pachyphloea Tul. from Mauritius and (?) Madagascar is very closely allied to P. opposita but has smaller globose fruits.
